Groundwork [edit]
The song was the group'due south atomic number 82 single from Tubthumper, their major-label debut.[3] It was released on 11 Baronial 1997.[4] [five] Vocalist Dunstan Bruce retrospectively observed that, before the grouping wrote it, they "were in a mess: we had get directionless and disparate". He credited "Tubthumping" with irresolute that, telling The Guardian, "It's not our most political or best song, but it brought united states back together. The song is about u.s.a. – every bit a form and as a band. The dazzler of information technology was we had no thought how big it would be."[half dozen]
Writing and composition [edit]
A Leeds pub called the Fforde Grene served equally the grouping'due south inspiration for the song; guitarist Boff Whalley told The Guardian that it was written about "the resilience of ordinary people";[six] musically, "Tubthumping" is a trip the light fantastic-rock, alternative stone, and dance-punk song in D major.[7] [8] [9] [ten] [11]
Disquisitional reception [edit]
Larry Flick from Billboard wrote, "Some records just demand attention: 'Tubthumping' is one of the rare few. You can spend iii times the runway's running time plucking out the seemingly disparate sounds and contrasted genre references—starting with the forceful alterna-rock guitar scratches, the hip-hop-derived beats, and the swing-mode horns. Holding it all together are the kind of rousing, gang-like chants that you hear at football games. Sounds odd, eh? Well, y'all won't soon forget this jam after first heed. And you'll probable be hearing it on pop and modern rock stations for months to come. If this jewel is indicative of the tone of the human activity's forthcoming album, it should be quite a head trip."[12] A reviewer from Daily Record described it as an "irritating tricky drinking canticle from the agitator band".[13] It was too chosen a "raucous anthem".[14] Pan-European magazine Music & Media said, "After a decade and a half spent equally indie heroes this collective is likely to intermission into the mainstream in a large way".[15] Ian Hyland of the Sunday Mirror rated information technology eight out of 10, writing, "Sing a terrace chant, mention lager and the rugby boys will be making boozed-up human pyramids on the dance floor in seconds. And you'll have a monster hit – good work, chum."[16] Troy J. Augusto from Variety declared it as a "drinking-and-dancing canticle" and "the quirk hit of the flavour".[17]
In The Hamlet Voice 's Pazz & Jop poll for 1997, "Tubthumping" was voted the 2nd-best single of the year.[18] Australian radio station Triple J ranked it No. three in its Triple J Hottest 100 for the same twelvemonth.[19] Author Bruce Pollock included it in his 2005 volume "The seven,500 Most Of import Songs of 1944-2000".[20] "Tubthumping" also placed at No. 12 in Rolling Stone 's 2007 list of the "20 Most Annoying Songs"[21] and at No. eight in the mag's 2011 list of the "Summit 10 I-Striking Wonders of All Time".[22]
